The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has opened a new truck parking lot at the Sunset Point Rest Area on Interstate 17, located between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction. This initiative is part of a broader statewide plan to increase commercial truck parking spaces along interstate freeways.
The newly constructed lot provides 19 additional spaces for trucks at a rest area where the existing 27 commercial vehicle spots are often full. The $4.1 million project also includes waterless vaulted toilets and covered ramadas. The parking surface was built using gravel supported by a grid, which ADOT says costs about half as much as asphalt pavement and allows for more efficient use of space since it does not require water retention areas.
According to ADOT, “The expanded parking at Sunset Point is the result of an ADOT plan to construct several hundred truck parking spaces in 7 rest area sites along interstates in areas with the greatest needs.” Additional truck parking is expected within the next year at four other rest areas:
– I-40 Parks Rest Area: Reopening in spring 2026 just west of Flagstaff for truck parking only, adding 21 new spaces to the existing 18.
– I-17 Christensen Rest Area: Reopening in spring 2026 just south of Flagstaff for truck parking only, maintaining its current 21 spaces.
– I-10 Burnt Wells Rest Area: Adding 125 spaces west of Phoenix in late 2026.
– I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Area: Adding 133 spaces just west of Winslow in winter 2027.
In December, ADOT also opened 57 new truck parking spaces at the Haviland Rest Area on I-40 west of Kingman.
These expansion plans were developed through a Statewide Truck Parking Implementation Plan assembled with public input and collaboration with the trucking industry. “The additional spaces are planned in locations along interstates in areas with the greatest needs. These locations are along Interstate 10, Interstate 40 and Interstate 8 and are at existing rest areas and two proposed lots that would provide parking only for commercial trucks.”
Documents related to this plan and maps showing recommended new locations can be found on ADOT’s study website at azdot.gov/TruckParking.
