America250 has initiated “Our American Story,” a project designed to gather and preserve stories from across the United States as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026. The project aims to create the largest collection of oral and visual histories in U.S. history.
The launch event took place on the National Mall, featuring remarks from America250 Chair Rosie Rios and Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. NFL Super Bowl Champion Darrell Green was also present and contributed his personal story to the initiative.
Rosie Rios emphasized the importance of preserving individual stories, stating, “As we approach our nation’s 250th birthday, we are reminded that history is not only written in the pages of textbooks but lived every day through each uniquely American story.” Mayor Bowser expressed pride in Washington, D.C.’s role as the starting point for this national project.
“Our American Story” will travel across all 50 states over a year-long period, collecting interviews that focus on themes such as identity, service, community, and personal legacy. These conversations will be archived at the Library of Congress. Some stories will be shared publicly through various media collaborations.
Initial stops for the tour include cities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas. The initiative is supported by sponsors like Walmart and Chrysler brands including Dodge and Jeep. Walmart will host many tour stops at its locations.
