The American Federation for Children announced on April 16 that it strongly condemns the attempt by Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and 29 Democratic Senators to repeal the Education Freedom Tax Credit. The organization said the law, passed last summer, is a landmark measure that will put billions of new education dollars directly in the hands of families, with 29 states already opting in and millions of families expecting new scholarships starting next year.

According to the statement, “The Education Freedom Tax Credit is the nation’s first law that could expand school choice to families in all 50 states, unlocking billions of dollars in new scholarship funding. Passed into law last summer, the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit will provide a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) starting in 2027. SGOs will, in turn, provide school choice scholarships to families. This attempt to stop it will fail.”

Ryan Cantrell, Chief State Strategy Officer at the American Federation for Children, said: “Parents, students, taxpayers, and families across America won a historic victory with the passage of the Education Freedom Tax Credit, and now Senator Mark Kelly and 29 of his Democratic colleagues want to take it away from them. The EFTC empowers taxpayers and families to direct K-12 education dollars where they see fit, and 29 states have already embraced it. These Senators should listen to the families who will benefit, not the big schooling unions – the only group who will be celebrating this attempt to turn back the clock. The fact is school choice is wildly popular, and here to stay. We are confident this misguided effort will achieve nothing but reminding parents where their representatives stand.”

Further details about this announcement can be found on the organization’s press release.
