The Arizona State Board of Education is set to consider a proposal on Monday to remove Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) language from state teaching standards. This move aligns with Executive Order 14151 issued by former President Trump, which mandates federal programs to eliminate DEI language and policies.

Superintendent Tom Horne has instructed the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) staff to suggest changes in Board rules to comply with this order. The presentation will be made during the Board’s meeting scheduled for October 27 at 9 A.M. at the State Board of Education located at 1700 W. Washington, 3rd Floor.

The Board will decide whether to initiate a comprehensive process that could take several months and involve input from various stakeholders. Failure to open this process might result in withholding approximately $866 million in federal education funds pending a federal review.

Superintendent Horne emphasized the importance of conforming to the executive order, stating: “Citing a need to conform to President Trump’s Executive Order 14151 requiring federal programs to abandon Diversity, Equity and Inclusion language and policies.”

The meeting will be available for public viewing via livestream on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@arizonastateboardofeducati2538/streams
