The Arizona Department of Public Safety announced on Mar. 24 that a suspect involved in a fatal collision in December 2024 has been arrested in Utah with the help of the United States Marshals Service.

The case is significant because it resulted in three deaths and several serious injuries, prompting a multi-state search for the suspect.

According to authorities, on December 7, 2024, detectives from the Vehicular Crimes Unit responded to a crash on southbound U.S. 93 near milepost 175 in Congress, Arizona. Investigators determined that Amy Lynn Mickelson, age 48, was impaired when she crossed the center line while driving her BMW sedan and struck a Toyota Sienna minivan head-on. Three people inside the Sienna died at the scene. Four other occupants—minor children between ages five and sixteen—were seriously injured and transported for medical treatment.

After the incident, officials said Mickelson left Arizona and moved to Utah. The Vehicular Crimes Unit then asked for assistance from deputies assigned to the United States Marshals Service to locate her. She was arrested outside a convenience store in Salt Lake City on Thursday, March 19, and booked into Weber County Jail without bond pending extradition to Yavapai County.

Authorities stated that Mickelson faces multiple charges related to this incident. “This arrest demonstrates the determination of VCU detectives and their commitment to pursuing justice for the victims and families,” said officials from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The department also thanked federal partners for their support during this investigation.
