The Arizona Department of Public Safety announced on March 16 that detectives from its Vehicular Crimes Unit arrested Jack Crawford, a 52-year-old Patagonia resident, in connection with the death of Michael Stewart, who fell from a pickup truck in Tucson in September 2025.

The case centers on an incident that occurred near State Route 77 and Golder Ranch Road. According to authorities, Stewart, age 37, was riding in the bed of a pickup truck driven by Crawford when he fell from the vehicle. Stewart suffered fatal injuries and was later found deceased in the roadway by passing motorists.

Detectives said their investigation determined that Crawford did not stop to provide aid or report the incident to law enforcement. After several months of investigative work, officers located Crawford in Patagonia and arrested him without incident on March 9 for failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving death.

Officials highlighted the efforts made by investigators throughout this case. “This arrest reflects the persistence of our VCU detectives, whose thorough investigative efforts help provide answers for families and pursue accountability for those responsible for criminal activity,” according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The department has not released further details about court proceedings or additional charges related to this case.
