With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is advising drivers to plan ahead and stay alert when traveling on state highways. ADOT will not schedule any full construction or maintenance closures from Wednesday afternoon, November 26, through Monday morning, December 1.

Traffic is expected to be heavier and slower at times on major routes such as Interstate 17 north of Phoenix. The department noted that its new eight-mile flex lanes system between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point will be open, providing two additional northbound lanes from Wednesday through Saturday. On Sunday, November 30, these lanes will switch to serve southbound traffic. ADOT’s recent improvement project on I-17 has also expanded the highway to three lanes in each direction between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City.

Drivers are reminded that unexpected incidents such as disabled vehicles or crashes may still occur despite the absence of scheduled closures. ADOT stated it will coordinate with law enforcement and first responders to clear any incidents quickly.

To help avoid delays, ADOT recommends starting trips early and steering clear of peak travel periods if possible. Motorists are encouraged to check tire pressure, engine fluid levels, and ensure they are well-rested before driving.

Packing an emergency kit is advised in case of inclement weather or car trouble. Recommended items include extra bottled water, snacks, a flashlight with batteries, blankets, warm clothing like gloves, and a first-aid kit.

Busy conditions are also anticipated on State Route 87 between Fountain Hills and Payson as well as interstates 8 and 10 connecting Phoenix or Tucson with California.

Last year’s Thanksgiving weekend saw ten fatal crashes resulting in ten deaths statewide; four were alcohol-related according to law enforcement reports.

ADOT’s Incident Response Unit (IRU), sponsored by GEICO, will continue patrols on Phoenix-area freeways in Maricopa County from 4 a.m. to midnight weekdays and from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends. IRU operators assist both troopers and motorists who need help. More details about this service can be found on the ADOT website.

Real-time highway updates are available via ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site and the AZ511 app for Apple or Android devices. Highway condition updates can also be found on ADOT’s Twitter/X feed @ArizonaDOT.
