The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced the 12 finalists in its Name-A-Snowplow contest, following more than 2,300 public submissions. The public can now vote for their favorite names at azdot.gov/NameAPlow through February 24. The four names with the most votes will be displayed on snowplows operating in northern Arizona.

The finalists are: Clearopathra, Saltimus Prime, Oh Snow You Don’t, Snowminator, Thaw Patrol, Sleet Dreams, Snow Mater, Snowverine, Blizzard Wizard, Scoopy-Doo, Subzero Hero and Snowmaggedon.

According to ADOT: “The winning names will be placed on ADOT snowplows at maintenance yards in northern Arizona.”

These new names will join those from previous contests such as Snowbi-Wan Kenobi, Fast and Flurryous and Scoopacabra. Other past winners include Alice Scooper, Frost Responder and Sleetwood Mac.

ADOT operates a fleet of about 200 snowplows and employs around 400 operators who work in shifts to keep highways clear during winter storms. “If you encounter a snowplow on a highway: Never attempt to pass the snowplow. Stay at least four car-lengths behind snowplows and do not tailgate the plow. Slow down and give the plow extra room.” Additional winter driving safety tips are available at azdot.gov/KnowSnow.

The department manages various facilities across Arizona including rest areas and highway cameras for monitoring conditions. Its operations extend statewide—from projects near Grand Canyon National Airport to southern border ports—supporting transportation infrastructure in multiple districts (https://azdot.gov/home). ADOT’s initiatives focus on connecting people safely while supporting economic growth (https://azdot.gov/home).

Jennifer Toth serves as director of ADOT and oversees planning, construction and maintenance of state transportation systems (https://azdot.gov/home). The agency also collaborates with regional partners on corridor studies and traveler information systems (https://azdot.gov/home), offering services like real-time updates via AZ 511 as well as support for airports and ports (https://azdot.gov/home).
