The Arizona Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 10 that sections of a new fourth westbound general purpose lane have opened along the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) between Interstate 17 and 51st Avenue, as part of an ongoing $140 million widening project.
The project aims to improve traffic flow in the area, with full completion expected by spring 2027. The expansion is intended to offer drivers a preview of the benefits anticipated once all construction is finished. Closures and lane restrictions will continue as work progresses between I-17 and 75th Avenue.
Construction began in September 2024, funded through Proposition 400—a regional transportation plan approved by voters in 2004 and managed by the Maricopa Association of Governments. Additional improvements are underway, including a new freeway entrance turn lane along southbound 75th Avenue. Project updates can be found at azdot.gov/loop-101-75th-ave-i-17.
