The Arizona Department of Transportation announced on April 1 that there will be no mainline freeway closures for improvement projects in the Phoenix area during the weekend of April 3-6.

This update is important for drivers planning travel within the region, as it signals minimal disruption to traffic flow. The department urges motorists to focus on safety, especially during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Drivers are reminded to stay alert, follow reduced speed limits in work zones, avoid distractions, and never drive while impaired.

ADOT continues its work on new freeways and other infrastructure improvements throughout the Phoenix area as part of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan. Many current projects are funded by Proposition 400, a sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. Construction has also begun on the Loop 303 Improvement Project between Interstate 17 and 51st Avenue, which is funded under Proposition 479—a measure passed by voters in November that extends a half-cent tax for transportation upgrades.

Arizona Department of Transportation manages various facilities across the state including rest areas, snowplow operations with specialized equipment, and highway cameras for monitoring according to the official website. The agency aims to safely connect people and support economic growth through its transportation initiatives as reported by its official website. Jennifer Toth serves as director overseeing planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of Arizona’s transportation systems according to ADOT’s official website.

The department’s responsibilities extend statewide—handling highway projects across multiple districts and supporting sites from Grand Canyon National Airport to southern border ports according to ADOT’s official website. In addition to these efforts, ADOT works alongside regional partners—including state agencies and tribal governments—on corridor studies and traveler information systems as stated on their site. Services such as real-time traveler updates via AZ511.gov or mobile app are available along with motor vehicle support and infrastructure enhancements at airports and ports according to ADOT’s official website.
