A trooper with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) was involved in a shooting after a pursuit in Tucson early Tuesday morning. The incident began around 12:29 a.m. on January 27, 2026, when the trooper attempted to stop a white Toyota Camry for criminal speed on eastbound Interstate 10 near milepost 252.
According to AZDPS, the driver did not yield to emergency lights and siren, resulting in a pursuit. The suspect exited at Speedway Boulevard, where the vehicle struck both a bicyclist and a pedestrian before crashing. Following the crash, the suspect fired at the pursuing trooper, who returned fire and struck the suspect. The individual tried to flee but was taken into custody shortly after being shot and was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The bicyclist died from injuries sustained during the incident. The pedestrian suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased bicyclist.
One trooper received minor injuries during the event.
AZDPS stated that “the off-ramps and the intersection will be closed for an extended period to complete the investigation. Please use alternative routes.” The intersection reopened just before 3 p.m., following investigative work by AZDPS’s Major Incident Division (MID). Additional information about MID can be found at https://www.azdps.gov/organization.
AZDPS expressed appreciation for assistance from multiple agencies: “AZDPS extends its appreciation to the Tucson Police Department, Pima County Sheriff’s Department, and the Arizona Department of Transportation for their assistance.”
