In the wake of a cybersecurity breach in the Arizona Secretary of State’s office, the Arizona Republican Party (AZGOP) and the Republican National Committee (RNC) have called for immediate transparency from state officials. The breach, which became public on July 1, involved hackers reportedly linked to Iran who altered candidate photos on the Secretary of State’s website and posted inflammatory messages.
The AZGOP and RNC submitted a formal public records request seeking detailed information about the systems compromised, the nature and source of the attack, data that may have been exposed, and what steps are being taken to address the incident. They have also asked for expedited processing and a waiver of fees due to the significant public interest in election security.
“Arizonans deserve immediate transparency about the cybersecurity breach that could undermine confidence in our elections,” said AZGOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda. “This is not a partisan issue—it’s an issue of trust and security. We expect swift and comprehensive cooperation from the Secretary of State’s office.”
The breach led to a shutdown of the candidate portal and has raised concerns nationally about vulnerabilities in Arizona’s election infrastructure. Despite these concerns, AZGOP officials say there has been little information released by Secretary of State Adrian Fontes’s office regarding the scope or impact of the cyberattack.
The parties’ request highlights ongoing worries about potential threats to critical election systems and stresses that clear communication is essential to maintain public trust.
