Arizona House Republicans have announced that HB 2607 has been signed into law, introducing stricter prison sentences for high-volume fentanyl traffickers.
According to their post on X, the Arizona House Republicans confirmed that HB 2607 is a targeted response to the fentanyl epidemic affecting families across the state. The legislation mandates tougher sentencing for individuals trafficking large quantities of fentanyl, highlighting the caucus’s commitment to public safety. Their announcement emphasized that trafficking fentanyl should result in lengthy prison terms to ensure community safety.
A press release from the Arizona House of Representatives states that HB 2607 mandates a minimum sentence of five years, a presumptive term of ten years, and a maximum of fifteen years for anyone caught with 200 grams or more of fentanyl in a motor vehicle with intent to sell. Repeat offenders face an additional five-year sentence on top of those penalties. Representative Quang Nguyen, the bill’s sponsor, said, “Fentanyl is killing our kids and ripping apart families,” stressing that traffickers must be incarcerated “for a long time.”
