Arizona Republicans have introduced a $1.1 billion tax relief plan to align the state’s tax code with federal reforms, aiming to provide significant savings for residents over the next three years. The initiative, spearheaded by Senate Finance Committee Chairman J.D. Mesnard and House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Justin Olson, seeks to adjust Arizona’s tax structure to benefit working families.
Senator Mesnard emphasized the legislature’s history of reducing taxes, stating, “This legislature has a strong record of cutting taxes and lowering costs for Arizona families.” He highlighted past measures such as a flat income tax and direct rebates. The new plan aims to further lower taxes and increase deductions for childcare expenses.
Senate President Warren Petersen stressed the urgency of passing this legislation due to ongoing tax season preparations. “Until the Legislature acts and the Governor signs this plan into law, there is real confusion about how to handle state tax returns,” he said.
House Speaker Steve Montenegro criticized Governor Hobbs’ recent executive order on state tax guidance, calling it an overreach that complicates matters for taxpayers. Representative Olson noted that the plan focuses on providing relief to working families, seniors, and small businesses while aligning with Trump’s federal tax cuts.
The proposed legislation will be debated when the 57th Legislature convenes next week.
