The Arizona Legislature approved a resolution on Apr. 20 affirming Israel’s sovereignty over Judea and Samaria, rejecting the use of the term “West Bank” for the region. The measure, which recognizes what it describes as the historical, biblical, and legal legitimacy of Judea and Samaria, passed both chambers with bipartisan support.
Supporters say this resolution matters because it addresses terminology they believe was imposed during Jordan’s occupation from 1948 to 1967 and affirms Arizona’s position regarding Israel’s connection to these territories. The Senate approved the measure as Israel observed Yom HaZikaron, a day that honors fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism.
Earlier in the session, House Resolution 2002 advanced similar policy within the chamber. Representative Livingston sponsored both measures. “Today, as Israel honors those who gave their lives defending the nation, Arizona stands with the truth about that nation’s history,” Representative Livingston said. “Judea and Samaria are central to Jewish history and faith. They are not political labels to be swapped out for convenience. This resolution affirms what is true and rejects language created to deny it. I thank my colleagues for standing with Israel and supporting this effort.”
The resolution also highlights Judea and Samaria’s importance for Israeli security as well as United States interests in preventing terrorist-controlled territory from emerging in that region.
