Enrolled members of federally recognized tribal nations in Arizona now have the option to receive driver licenses, instruction permits, and ID cards that display a Native American designation. This change comes as the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) implements a new state law effective January 1.
The legislation, House Bill 2852, was sponsored by Representative Myron Tsosie of Chinle. Under this law, individuals who choose the designation will see the words “Native American” printed on the front of their credential below their photo and signature.
To update an existing credential with this designation, applicants must submit a new application and photo. They are also required to provide additional proof of enrollment in a federally recognized tribe within Arizona. Acceptable documents include an Enhanced Tribal Card, Tribal Identification Card, Tribal Certificate of Indian Blood, or a Tribal or Bureau of Indian Affairs Affidavit of Birth.
The Arizona Department of Transportation manages transportation services across the state, including highways and motor vehicle operations. The department works with regional and tribal partners on various projects to support economic growth and link communities through its multimodal systems (official website).
