Arizona authorities are warning residents on April 15 about a sophisticated scam involving fake traffic ticket violations that targets drivers through text messages and fraudulent websites.

The alert is important because it highlights ongoing efforts by scammers to trick individuals into providing personal information or making payments for non-existent offenses. These scams can lead to financial loss and identity theft if not recognized in time.

According to the report, scammers have been impersonating government agencies using names such as the “Arizona Ministry of Communications” or “Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles,” which do not exist. Arizona’s legitimate agency is called the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). The fraudulent messages often reference toll violations, but Arizona does not have any toll roads. Some scams also cite legal codes that are not part of Arizona law, which can be verified at https://www.azleg.gov/arstitle/. The messages typically demand urgent payment via text message or QR code and may contain suspicious links that appear official but redirect users to domains ending in .wang, .xyz, or .top.

Authorities advise residents not to click on any suspicious links, provide personal information, or make payments through these channels. Instead, they recommend deleting such messages immediately and reporting them to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office or forwarding texts to 7726 (SPAM). Those who may have already interacted with a scam should contact their bank right away and file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office. Drivers concerned about legitimate traffic violations can check their status by visiting azmvdnow.gov or an MVD office in person.
