Walter “Les” Presmyk has been appointed as Arizona’s new State Mine Inspector, a position considered important due to the significance of mining in the state’s economy and its impact on public safety. Presmyk brings more than 40 years of experience in mining, including time as Principal Mining Engineer at Salt River Project and service as a Gilbert Town Councilman.
Arizona Republican Party Chairwoman Gina Swoboda commented on the appointment, stating, “Les is the right leader at the right time. His experience and integrity are exactly what Arizona needs to oversee one of our most vital industries.”
The role of State Mine Inspector involves overseeing mine site safety, reclamation efforts, environmental protection measures, and workforce wellbeing. According to the Arizona Republican Party, Presmyk’s background ensures that the office will be led with engineering expertise and constitutional stewardship.
Presmyk has also been recognized for his leadership beyond technical roles. He has mentored mayors, served on nonprofit boards, and contributed to both community development and mineral education initiatives.
“His experience and integrity are exactly what Arizona needs to oversee one of our most vital industries,” Swoboda said.
