Late Monday, House Republicans voted against canceling tariffs on Brazil imposed during the Trump administration. These tariffs have contributed to a 20.9% increase in coffee prices over the past year, marking the largest rise since the 1990s. In August alone, coffee prices saw a 3.6% increase.
Arizona Republicans David Schweikert, Eli Crane, and Juan Ciscomani were among those who voted to maintain these tariffs. Congressman Don Bacon was one of only two Republicans who opposed tabling the resolution. Following this vote, reports from POLITICO indicate that GOP leaders are planning to prevent any congressional oversight regarding Trump’s tariffs on countries including Mexico, Canada, and Brazil.
Recent polls show that Trump’s tariffs are unpopular with the American public; only 38% approve while 62% disapprove, an increase from 59% in June.
Lindsay Reilly, spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), commented on the situation: “Arizona Republicans David Schweikert, Eli Crane, and Juan Ciscomani promised to lower costs, but they voted to support cost-spiking tariffs that are only making things worse.”
