Arizona State Rep.Selina Sieh Bliss celebrated the signing of her bill to update training standards for radiologic technologists, saying it will expand access to healthcare imaging services.Â
HB2050 is intended to update educational requirements for radiologic technologists in Arizona, addressing workforce shortages and expanding healthcare access across the state. The bill modifies statutes governing educational standards by expanding acceptable school accreditations, revising required coursework, and aligning clinical hours with national standards, according to the official bill text. The proposal was designed based on collaborative discussions among healthcare employers, educators, and legislators that began in 2024 at Yavapai College to address barriers in the profession, as reported by Signals AZ.
Arizona’s healthcare sector has faced demand for diagnostic imaging professionals amid population growth and an aging patient base in both urban and rural areas. Supporters of the legislation said the measure would give educational institutions more flexibility to train qualified professionals by modifying previous regulatory requirements.
Nationally, the vacancy rate for radiologic technologists reached 18.1% in 2024, an increase of 6.2% from 2021, according to the Radiological Society of North America.
Bliss was elected in 2022 as representative of Legislative District 1 and chairs the House Committee on Health and Human Services. She is a registered nurse with degrees from Arizona State University and Capella University, according to Ballotpedia.
