As Arizona faces increasing electricity demands, the state’s electric utilities have set new records for peak energy usage. The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) is focusing on maintaining grid reliability and stability by approving new generation and infrastructure projects to meet these demands.
On July 9, 2025, both Arizona Public Service Company (APS) and Salt River Project (SRP) recorded their highest peak electricity demand between 5 and 6 p.m., coinciding with a high temperature of 118 degrees in Phoenix. “Hitting a new record peak demand for a third year in a row is a big deal,” said Chair Kevin Thompson. He emphasized the dedication of utility employees to maintaining grid reliability under extreme conditions.
In 2025, APS reached a peak demand of 8,527 megawatts (MW), while SRP recorded 8,324 MW. Vice Chair Nick Myers highlighted the importance of planning and accountability from utilities as peak demand continues to grow. “These new peak demand records are a clear signal that we must stay ahead of the curve,” he stated.
During the ACC’s Summer Preparedness Workshop, APS and SRP assured they could produce over 24,000 MW combined to meet daily summer demands. Commissioner Rachel Walden expressed appreciation for utility workers’ efforts in preparing for extreme weather conditions.
Arizona ranks seventh nationally for power grid reliability according to U.S. News & World Report and Climate Central. Commissioner Lea Márquez Peterson noted that residents depend on utilities’ preparation during hot months: “Our work at the ACC balancing capital investment and affordability of rates is important.”
The Commission encourages residents to reduce electric demand during peak hours through actions like lowering energy use or joining demand response programs.
