The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office Reentry Services program received a $5,000 community reinvestment from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Health Choice to support transportation assistance for individuals released from custody, according to a June 1 announcement.
Navajo County spans approximately 10,000 square miles of mostly rural land. Many people leaving jail have no money or ride home, increasing the risk of crisis and potential reoffending. The NCSO Reentry Services Transportation Assistance Program provides bus passes, Greyhound tickets, taxi rides, and short motel stays to help individuals return safely to their families or support systems.
Between May 2025 and March 2026, the program used $4,270.82 of the funding to provide 70 local transit passes and travel assistance for 36 individuals. Eight recipients had significant mobility challenges requiring additional support both in custody and after release. The program also covered immediate shelter needs and connections to community resources.
Real-life examples from the program include a veteran who was provided with a Greyhound ticket home after being stranded in Holbrook and an eighteen-year-old who received shelter and travel assistance after being left without resources by her family. Before departing Arizona, she filed a report about her siblings’ living conditions that initiated an investigation.
Lieutenant Charlie Perkins said, “Thanks to the support of AZ Blue Health Choice, these funds help ensure the safety of justice-involved individuals by helping them reach a secure place with resources and support, and they strengthen community safety by reducing the likelihood that people who feel trapped reoffend out of desperation.”
According to the official website, the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce bolsters Flagstaff communities by fostering economic development through partnerships with stakeholders across northern Arizona.
