Arizona House Republicans have announced plans to hold a hearing with expert witnesses to explore the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on democratic governance and election integrity in the state. This initiative is set to take place ahead of the upcoming legislative session, as said in an announcement on X.

State legislatures nationwide are increasingly scrutinizing the effects of emerging technologies on election administration. According to research from the National Conference of State Legislatures, there is growing concern over AI-generated misinformation, including election-related deepfakes and automated content tools, which pose new challenges for public trust. These national trends provide context for Arizona lawmakers’ decision to convene subject-matter experts.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has reported a rise in AI-enabled disinformation campaigns targeting elections. The agency notes that generative tools facilitate the production of convincing false content. CISA’s public guidance highlights risks such as manipulated audio, synthetic candidates, and algorithmically amplified narratives, underscoring the importance of legislative inquiry into protective measures.

A 2024 analysis by the Stanford Internet Observatory documents over a dozen cases of AI-generated political persuasion efforts detected across global elections. These include synthetic robocalls and fabricated policy statements. The report concludes that election systems must prepare for rapid advancements in machine-generated influence operations, reinforcing the relevance of Arizona’s planned hearing.

The Arizona Republican Party (AZ GOP) describes itself as the official Republican organization for the state, supporting candidates, shaping policy priorities, and engaging voters statewide. Its messaging emphasizes election integrity, limited government, and public transparency. The organization coordinates communications, grassroots outreach, and legislative engagement through its statewide network.
