The Arizona Cardinals welcomed rookie quarterback Carson Beck as he arrived for rookie minicamp in Tempe on May 7. Beck, who was selected in the third round of April’s draft, joins a roster that currently lists Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II ahead of him on the depth chart.
The addition of Beck comes as the Cardinals continue to evaluate their quarterback situation. The team has not named a starting quarterback, and Brissett is reportedly seeking a contract adjustment while not participating in voluntary activities. General Manager Monti Ossenfort said recently, “We have two guys who have played and started a lot of games in the NFL in Jacoby and Gardner and that’s going to be a great competition. We’ll bring (Carson) in and see how much he can handle and we’ll see how that competition plays out in the room. In the end the guy who is going to give us the best chance to win, that’s who is going to be out there on Sundays.”
Beck said his years playing at Georgia—where he waited three seasons before starting—and Miami were important for his development: “I think everybody has to run their own race,” Beck said. “Those three years I had of playing and starting are priceless.” He suffered an elbow injury during his college career but stated that after rehabilitation, “my arm is as strong as it’s ever been, the injury a distant memory.” Despite doubts about his ability at this level or concerns about time spent in college, Beck emphasized focusing on improvement rather than outside opinions: “It’s all poison,” he said.
During minicamp preparations, Beck explained his approach: “Even if I were to be the guy at some point, you are constantly learning, through game experience, through past experience, meetings, just talking to guys around the facility, you’re trying to get breadcrumbs from each and every person.” He added: “Experience is nothing if there is no application from the lessons that you’ve learned from the experiences.”
The Arizona Cardinals play home games in Glendale as part of the National Football League’s NFC West division; they serve fans throughout greater Phoenix and are recognized as one of football’s oldest continuously operating franchises according to their official website.
Looking ahead, Beck will continue participating with other rookies before joining veterans for offseason programs next week.
