Social Security, a key program for the financial security of many Americans, marks its 90th anniversary. The program is essential for nearly 1.5 million Arizonans who depend on it. However, recent actions by David Schweikert, Eli Crane, Juan Ciscomani, and other Republicans in Washington have raised concerns about the future of Social Security.
The three politicians supported legislation known as the Big, Ugly Law. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described this law as a potential “backdoor for privatizing Social Security.” Additionally, Schweikert, Crane, and Ciscomani endorsed Elon Musk’s initiative that led to significant cuts in Social Security offices’ staff and resources. As a result of these measures, Social Security offices have reportedly lost around 20% of their workforce.
Furthermore, the current administration has proposed reducing disability benefits. The Chief Actuary has warned that the Social Security trust fund might deplete faster than previously anticipated due to these legislative changes.
Social Security remains crucial for many in Arizona: over 1.4 million receive benefits from it; more than 111,000 receive Supplemental Security Income; and it lifts over 388,000 Arizonans out of poverty. A majority of retirees rely on Social Security for at least half of their income.
DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene commented on the situation: “For 90 years, Social Security has represented our nation’s promise that every American worker deserves to retire with dignity and peace of mind. David Schweikert, Eli Crane, and Juan Ciscomani have chosen to break that promise… The DCCC will hold Schweikert, Crane, and Ciscomani accountable for their broken promises every day until Arizonans vote them out of office next November.”
