Corn futures rise as USDA reports planting progress and export sales

Corn futures ended higher on Monday, with most contracts gaining between 3 and 5 cents. The CmdtyView national average cash corn price increased by 4 cents to $4.34 3/4.

The United States Department of Agriculture reported two private export sales of corn: one for 380,000 metric tons to Mexico (split between the 2025/26 and 2026/27 marketing years) and another for 128,000 metric tons of the 2025/26 crop to South Korea. According to NASS Crop Progress data released Sunday, U.S. corn planting reached 57%, which is ahead of the five-year average pace of 52%. The crop was also reported as being 23% emerged, four percentage points faster than normal.

USDA’s Federal Grain Inspection Service tallied corn export shipments at nearly 1.7 million metric tons during the week ending May 7. This figure is down more than seventeen percent from the previous week but up thirty percent compared to the same period last year. Mexico was the top destination with over four hundred sixty thousand metric tons shipped.

Traders are awaiting Tuesday’s release of the May World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, which will provide updated figures on old crop corn stocks and introduce initial projections for next year’s balance sheet. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expect U.S. production in the coming year to reach almost sixteen billion bushels with yields estimated at one hundred eighty-three bushels per acre.
