Mary Romney, an ENT Specialist at Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy Center, said that balloon sinuplasty is a highly effective treatment for sinus disease, particularly in mild cases, but also beneficial for severe conditions. This statement was made on Instagram.

“A balloon sinuplasty is a wonderful option to treat any degree of sinus issues,” said Romney, according to Instagram. “It can be really, really great for mild sinus disease and that’s actually where it’s going to have the highest success rates. It can absolutely be used for severe sinus disease as well. Balloon sinuplasty is effective across a spectrum of sinus disease severity.”

According to Medical News Today, balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure with high success rates in treating chronic sinusitis. A 2017 study reported a 94% success rate in children undergoing the procedure, with positive effects lasting up to one year. This technique is increasingly favored for cases unresponsive to medical therapies.

As reported by the National Library of Medicine, balloon sinuplasty is particularly effective for patients with mild to moderate chronic sinusitis. A study found that 88.5% of patients experienced long-term benefits from the procedure, especially when combined with nasal corticosteroid use. However, its efficacy may be limited in cases with more complex sinus anatomy or severe disease.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, balloon sinuplasty is used to treat chronic or recurrent sinusitis when medical therapy has not provided adequate relief. It involves dilating the sinus openings with a small balloon and is generally performed on adults with mild forms of sinusitis. The procedure is not suitable for all patients and should be determined appropriate by a healthcare provider.

Romney is a physician assistant specializing in Otolaryngology at Scottsdale Sinus & Allergy Center. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Health Science from Arizona State University and her Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies from Northern Arizona University. Before her current role, she gained extensive experience in family medicine and urgent care.
