Josh Mauro, a former defensive lineman for the Arizona Cardinals, died at the age of 35, according to an April 28 announcement from the team. Mauro played for the Cardinals in three separate stints, first joining under coach Bruce Arians from 2014 to 2017 and later returning in both 2020 and 2021 during periods when injuries affected the roster.

Mauro’s career with the Cardinals included starting in 13 games during the 2016 season. Over his time with the team, he recorded four sacks in a total of 55 games. He also spent seasons with other teams such as the Raiders and Giants. Despite not having standout statistics, Mauro was known for his attitude toward teamwork. “It’s bigger than you making plays, it’s bigger than getting your name called, it’s bigger than the newspaper having your numbers,” Mauro said after his notable season in 2016.

The Arizona Cardinals released a statement following news of his death: “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss.” Former front office member Adrian Wilson also remembered Mauro on social media: “Prayers go out to Josh Mauro and his family,” Wilson wrote. “Had the opportunity to be around Josh for several years with BA. Always in shape, always was ready to go wherever he got that call. One of the things I respected most about him. You could depend on him.”

In addition to individual memories shared by colleagues and coaches, former defensive coordinator Vance Joseph once commented on Mauro’s role when he returned after Zach Allen went on injured reserve: “we replaced Zach with an older Zach.” This highlighted how valuable Mauro was as a reliable presence on the roster.

The Arizona Cardinals are recognized as a professional football team competing in the NFC West division according to their official website. The franchise serves fans across greater Phoenix and is noted as being America’s oldest continuously operating professional football organization according to their official website. The team captured an NFC championship title in 2008 as reported by their official website and hosts its home games in Glendale according to their official website.

As those who knew him reflect on his career and character both on and off the field, many remember Josh Mauro for being dependable whenever called upon.
