Karrin Taylor Robson, a gubernatorial candidate in Arizona, has criticized a court-sanctioned program for allegedly misusing taxpayer funds intended for law enforcement. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

“I was proud to stand with Sheriff Jerry Sheridan and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office last night,” said Taylor Robson. “Over $350M in taxpayer dollars have been wasted on this court-sanctioned grift with no transparency or accountability. It’s time to end this egregious waste of taxpayer dollars and give our law enforcement the resources they need to keep our communities safe.”

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is under increased scrutiny regarding its spending practices due to years of civil rights lawsuits, according to The Arizona Republic. Federal judges have imposed strict controls and required independent monitoring to ensure that the office’s funds are allocated toward court-ordered reforms, which include improved training and accountability measures.

The Arizona Republic reports that over the past decade, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has spent more than $200 million to comply with these court-mandated reforms and settlements. In some years, costs have reached up to $30 million for court monitors, staff, and necessary training linked to federal oversight.

A report by the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission indicates that statewide law enforcement funding in Arizona has steadily increased over the last five years. Counties such as Maricopa have redirected resources towards court compliance, training, and technology upgrades. This shift reflects evolving priorities in law enforcement budgets concerning oversight.

Taylor Robson is an attorney and former member of the Arizona Board of Regents. She was also a Republican candidate for governor in 2022, as noted by Ballotpedia. Her campaign emphasized fiscal responsibility with promises to reduce government waste and enforce stricter oversight of state spending, including allocations for law enforcement.
