State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne criticized legislative Democrats for their response to Governor Hobbs’ remarks on school choice during the State of the State address. According to Horne, the reaction from Democrats indicates their opposition to parental school choice.

Horne said, “Arizona parents have made it clear they believe in being able to choose the best education for their children, whether districts, charters or Empowerment Scholarship Accounts.” He further claimed that Democrats’ actions suggest they want to limit parental power and revert education control back to a government monopoly.

The State of Arizona Department of Education is at the center of this ongoing debate over educational options in Arizona.
