The Arizona Board of Regents announced on April 28 that its first ABOR Golf Classic raised over $90,000 to benefit the College Ready AZ FAFSA Scholarship. The event aims to help Arizona high school seniors take an important step toward enrolling in college by increasing access to financial aid.

The funds raised will expand the number of scholarships available for students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and plan to attend one of Arizona’s public universities or community colleges. This effort seeks to reduce financial barriers and encourage more students across the state to pursue higher education.

Regent Gregg Brewster said, “For many students, the FAFSA is the first step in understanding how college can be affordable. This event turns generosity into opportunity and helps ensure Arizona students have the financial support they need to achieve their dreams.”

The tournament was held at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix and included remarks from athletic directors Graham Rossini (Arizona State University), Beth Vechinski (Northern Arizona University), and Desireé Reed‑Francois (University of Arizona). Head coaches Kenny Dillingham (ASU football), Willie Bloomquist (ASU baseball), Brent Brennan (U of A football), and Chip Hale (U of A baseball) also spoke about supporting student success both academically and athletically.

Amelia Ray, a recipient of the College Ready AZ FAFSA Scholarship who plans to study medical studies at ASU this fall, shared her experience during the opening program. Ray said, “This scholarship has eased the financial stress of college and allows me to focus fully on my studies. I’m incredibly grateful to the board and the scholarship supporters for their generosity and for helping students like me pursue our education and make a positive impact.”

During the 2025–26 school year, 25 students received $2,000 scholarships thanks in part to organizations such as Arizona Community Foundation, Helios Education Foundation, and Valley of the Sun United Way. The funds from this inaugural golf classic are expected to increase opportunities for future recipients.
