Jonathan Nez, the former President of the Navajo Nation, has announced his candidacy for Congress in Arizona’s second congressional district. If successful, Nez would become the first Native American congressperson from Arizona. The district is home to 14 tribes, with nearly 20% of its population being Native American.
Nez highlighted his past efforts as Navajo Nation President, stating, “As Navajo Nation President, I worked across the aisle to deliver water security and lower prices for Northern Arizona, and that’s the kind of leadership we need in Congress.” He criticized incumbent Congressman Eli Crane, saying, “The only thing Crane has fought for since taking office is taking money from our hard-working families to give to billionaires.”
Nez grew up in Shonto, AZ, without electricity or running water. During his presidency of the Navajo Nation, he focused on expanding water rights and economic growth in rural areas. He criticized Crane for not residing in the district he represents and accused him of neglecting rural and tribal communities.
“Eli Crane voted to gut Arizonans’ health care and take food off our tables – all to pay for tax cuts for billionaires,” Nez said. He pointed out that nearly one-third of people in the district rely on Medicaid or AHCCCS and expressed concern over potential hospital closures due to Crane’s votes.
Nez’s campaign announcement follows a strong performance in a previous election cycle where he attracted significant grassroots support. The Cook Political Report noted Nez’s robust campaign operation aimed at mobilizing Native American voters and moderate Republicans disillusioned by Crane’s approach.
Democratic strategists believe Nez could make this race competitive if national political conditions favor Democrats. Nez is entering the race with a focus on advocating for Northern Arizona.
