The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced that the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) Improvement Project has reached its halfway point. The $200 million project began in August 2024 and is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
The construction involves adding two new lanes in each direction between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Gilbert Road, as well as one lane in each direction between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive. In addition to lane expansions, ADOT is reconstructing on- and off-ramps, widening bridges, installing new walls, updating freeway lighting, signs, message boards, and improving drainage systems.
Fiber-optic cables are also being installed for closed-circuit cameras and equipment that will provide real-time traffic information to both ADOT and the public.
ADOT is managing this project with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which is responsible for regional transportation planning in greater Phoenix. Funding comes from Proposition 400—a countywide half-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2004 dedicated to transportation improvements.
According to ADOT: “Work on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s $200 million project started in August 2024 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2027.”
