Interim improvements aimed at easing traffic congestion near the Loop 303 and US 60 interchange in Surprise have been completed, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). The changes are designed to enhance traffic flow at one of the area’s busiest junctions.
The project added new turn lanes from both directions of Grand Avenue onto 163rd Avenue, located west of the Loop 303 interchange. Additionally, a third left-turn lane was constructed on the southbound Loop 303 off-ramp to facilitate movement onto Grand Avenue. The $1.8 million effort began last September, with final pavement marking and striping finished early Friday morning.
Other enhancements include widening the southbound Loop 303 on-ramp from Grand Avenue for improved merging and introducing an eastbound US 60 right-turn lane approaching Loop 303. ADOT collaborated with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which serves as the region’s metropolitan planning organization, and the City of Surprise for these interim upgrades.
Long-term solutions are also being considered under MAG’s Proposition 479 freeway funding program. Future plans may involve reconfiguring the interchange and building new ramps over nearby BNSF Railway tracks. Construction on the first phase of these long-term improvements is set to begin in 2028, including a new traffic interchange at Loop 303 and 155th Avenue to offer additional access for local residents.
“ADOT has partnered with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), the Valley’s metropolitan planning organization, and the City of Surprise to make these interim improvements near the busy Loop 303/US 60 interchange.”
