The eastbound lanes of Loop 101, also known as the Agua Fria Freeway, will be closed between 59th Avenue and Interstate 17 this weekend. The closure is scheduled from 10 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 19, to facilitate work on a widening project.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the eastbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Union Hills Drive, 75th Avenue, and 67th Avenue will also be closed during this period. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes to avoid delays, such as exiting before the closure and using eastbound Union Hills Drive or Bell Road.

This weekend’s closure is part of the ongoing Loop 101 widening project between I-17 and 75th Avenue in the Northwest Valley. Additionally, two Loop 101 ramps are set for extended closures starting late Monday night, May 19. The westbound Loop 101 off-ramp at 51st Avenue and the eastbound on-ramp at 59th Avenue will close for reconstruction for approximately two months beginning at 11:30 p.m. that night. Motorists should plan to use other nearby ramps during this time.

Furthermore, the westbound Loop 101 on-ramp at 35th Avenue has been closed since May 12 for a similar duration.

The $140 million project aims to widen Loop 101 between I-17 and 75th Avenue by adding one lane in each direction along with several bridge expansions. New freeway lighting installations and pavement resurfacing are also included in the plans. The project’s completion is expected by spring of 2027.

For more detailed information about this project, ADOT directs individuals to visit azdot.gov/loop101-75th-I-17.

ADOT is overseeing this project in collaboration with Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria cities, and the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG). MAG functions as the metropolitan planning organization for greater Phoenix and schedules projects under its Regional Transportation Plan funded through Prop 400—a countywide half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements approved by voters in 2004.
