Students, families, and community leaders gathered at Villa Sienna in Gilbert for the National Civics Bee, an event hosted by The Civic Trust in partnership with the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Foundation on May 13. The event aimed to promote civic knowledge among young people and encourage thoughtful participation in their communities.
The National Civics Bee featured a panel of judges including Patrick Carlson, LaTisha Gilmore—Community Initiative Coordinator with the Town of Gilbert—and Andrea Whiting, President and Co-Founder of Tomorrow We Vote. Gilmore is recognized for her work building strong communities through equity-driven collaboration, while Whiting’s organization focuses on empowering young and marginalized groups through civic education.
Denise Lopez, President and CEO of HD South, served as emcee for the competition. Students competed across three rounds featuring civics-based quiz questions that tested both their knowledge and critical thinking skills under pressure. After a closely contested event, Shaurya Arora from BASIS Chandler took first place. Matthew Pallotto and Julia Wang from Highland Junior High School placed second and third respectively.
Organizers said events like this are intended to foster a generation of informed citizens who value participation in democracy. The involvement of students, educators, sponsors such as APS and the Town of Gilbert, along with community organizations like The Civic Trust and the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Foundation was highlighted as key to nurturing future leaders.
