The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced a series of freeway closures and lane restrictions in the Phoenix area for the weekend of October 24-27, as part of ongoing improvement projects.
Southbound Interstate 17 will be closed between Jomax and Deer Valley roads in north Phoenix from 9 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday to allow for pavement sealing. ADOT is advising drivers to expect heavy traffic and delays, and to consider adjusting travel plans or using alternate routes. The detour for southbound I-17 will direct traffic onto southbound 19th Avenue and westbound Deer Valley Road.
Northbound I-17 will be closed between Loop 101 and Jomax Road from 9 p.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday for similar pavement work. Both Loop 101 ramps to northbound I-17 will also be closed during this time. Northbound traffic can use the Rose Garden Lane/Deer Valley Road exit to detour via northbound 19th Avenue and westbound Jomax Road.
Eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed between Avondale Boulevard and 75th Avenue from Friday night at 9 p.m. until Saturday at 10 a.m., with additional ramp closures at Fairway Drive and along southbound Loop 101 between Camelback Road and I-10 due to pavement marking work. Drivers are advised to use eastbound Van Buren Street or McDowell Road as alternate routes.
Westbound I-10 will close between 75th Avenue and Avondale Boulevard from Saturday night at 9 p.m. until Sunday morning at 10 a.m., affecting several connecting ramps including those from Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) and Loop 101, as well as the on-ramp at 67th Avenue. Westbound travelers are encouraged to use McDowell Road or Van Buren Street instead.
Northbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) will be reduced to two lanes between I-10 and Bell Road in the West Valley starting Friday night through noon on Saturday due to pavement sealing, with possible ramp closures.
In Chandler, the primary westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) ramp to westbound I-10 will close both Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for maintenance; however, the HOV ramp remains open during this period.
All schedules may change depending on weather or other factors.
ADOT states: “ADOT plans and constructs new freeways, additional lanes and other improvements in the Phoenix area as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region.”
Most current projects receive funding through Proposition 400, a dedicated sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in https://www.maricopa.gov/1895/Proposition-400Regional-Transportation-Pla2004 that supports regional transportation infrastructure improvements over several decades. Last November, voters passed Proposition https://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2024/03/05/maricopa-county-voters-ok-prop-479-renewing-half-cent-sales-tax-for-roads-transit479, extending this half-cent sales tax for future transportation initiatives in Phoenix.
