Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport announced on Apr. 20 that it will recognize its volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week, which takes place from April 22 to April 28. The airport’s volunteer program includes Navigators, Navigator Buddies, Teen Navigators, and Navigator Chaplains who support guests and help maintain high service standards.
The recognition highlights the important role volunteers play in assisting travelers and contributing to the airport’s reputation for guest service. Since the start of the program in 2000, more than 1,800 volunteers have given over 1.7 million hours of service at Phoenix Sky Harbor.
Navigators are known for their purple attire and help guests with directions and information throughout the airport. Other volunteer groups include Navigator Buddies—therapy dogs who interact with passengers—Teen Navigators who are high school students volunteering during summer months, and Navigator Chaplains who provide spiritual support.
“All volunteers play an essential role in maintaining the high standards of America’s Friendliest Airport,” said Deputy Aviation Director for Public Relations Heather Shelbrack. “Their dedication, compassion and service help ensure that millions of travelers each year feel welcome and supported from the moment they arrive at Phoenix Sky Harbor.”
During this year’s appreciation week, activities will include sharing memorable moments by Navigators as well as executive team members shadowing a Navigator to observe their daily contributions.
