Salt River Project announced on May 14 that more of its customers may now qualify for help paying their electricity bills through the Power AZ program.

The expansion of eligibility is significant because it allows households with incomes up to 100% of the State Median Income—$8,998 per month for a family of four—to receive between $160 and $640 in assistance over a twelve-month period. This is higher than the income limits set by the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which means many who do not usually qualify under traditional guidelines may now be eligible. The program could benefit approximately 30,000 additional households across Arizona.

Launched by the State of Arizona in March, Power AZ provides financial support to Arizonans who may not meet criteria for existing low-income energy programs. In addition to regular assistance payments, qualifying applicants can receive a one-time crisis payment of up to $500. The total funding available is $15 million and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Customers interested in applying can use the Arizona Department of Economic Security’s A to Z portal. Applications are automatically reviewed for both LIHEAP and Power AZ based on household income and other factors such as urgency and energy usage.

Those experiencing further financial challenges beyond utility bills are encouraged to contact Salt River Project’s Resource Counselors for connections to community resources like housing, food, or heat relief. Resource Counselors are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while customer service representatives can assist with applications or referrals at any time by calling 602-236-8888 or 602-236-1111 (Spanish).

Salt River Project said it remains committed to helping customers manage monthly bills and access available support programs.
