The Santa Cruz County Local Workforce Development Board announced on May 11 the agenda for its upcoming meeting, scheduled for May 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Administrative County Complex in Nogales, Arizona. The meeting will also be accessible virtually via Zoom.

The board will address several topics including a budget report from the Finance Department, updates on the Santa Cruz County Strategic Plan and modifications to the 2027 Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Local Plan. Other items include certification updates from the Provisional College District, reports from One-Stop Operators and partners, adoption of previous meeting minutes, review of bylaws regarding attendance, and a roundtable discussion among board members.

Educational performance in Santa Cruz County has been highlighted by recent data showing that during the 2022-23 school year, 74.4% of students in grades three through eight did not pass the mathematics section of AASA assessments while 66.4% failed English; among high schoolers taking ACT exams that year, failure rates were reported at 84% for mathematics and 72% for English according to the Arizona Department of Education. More recently in the 2023-24 school year, there was some improvement with an estimated 18% of high schoolers passing ACT mathematics and about 23.6% of students in grades three through eight passing AASA mathematics assessments according to the Arizona Department of Education.

The board’s agenda also includes time allocated for public comment on matters within its jurisdiction as well as specific agenda items. No action will be taken on issues raised during general public comments unless listed on the agenda.

Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request for individuals with disabilities attending or participating in this federally funded program under WIOA guidelines.
