Significant methamphetamine seizure made during traffic stop near Wellton

On January 21, a trooper from the Canine District Drug Enforcement Bureau stopped a white 2011 BMW X5 on Interstate 8 near Wellton, Arizona. The vehicle was pulled over for multiple moving violations around 10:09 a.m.

During the stop, the trooper noticed signs of possible criminal activity. After receiving consent to search the vehicle, law enforcement found 167.55 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in a false floor compartment.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old Alex Peres from Baja California, Mexico, was arrested and booked into the Yuma Federal Detention Facility. He faces charges related to possession and transportation of dangerous drugs for sale.

District Four Highway Patrol and the Yuma Narcotics Squad assisted with the investigation. According to authorities, this seizure is considered a significant disruption to illegal drug trafficking operations and demonstrates effective cooperation between agencies.

“This seizure represents a significant disruption to illegal drug trafficking and highlights the effectiveness of proactive traffic enforcement and interagency cooperation,” officials stated.
