Soybeans close with slight losses after late recovery on May 8

Soybean futures finished slightly lower on May 8, recovering from earlier session lows to end the day with marginal declines. The cmdtyView national average cash soybean price dropped by 2 1/4 cents to $11.24 1/4. Soymeal futures ranged from $1.60 higher in front months to down by as much as 40 cents, while soy oil futures fell between 65 and 142 points.

Export sales data showed that old crop soybean sales for the week of April 30 reached a marketing year low at 141,940 metric tons, which is a decrease of more than sixty percent compared to the same week last year. China purchased the largest share at nearly half of total sales, with Japan and Indonesia also making significant purchases. New crop soybean sales totaled just 5,500 metric tons, all destined for Indonesia.

Sales for soybean meal were reported at just over three hundred thirty-five thousand metric tons within expectations for the period. Bean oil bookings were minimal at only nine hundred fifty-four metric tons during the same timeframe.

Brazil’s soybean exports are projected by ANEC to reach approximately fourteen and a half million metric tons in May, up slightly from previous estimates. Actual export data from Brazil’s trade ministry indicated record shipments in April totaling over sixteen million metric tons—an increase of nearly ten percent compared to last year.

May soybeans closed at $11.77 per bushel, down two cents; July contracts ended at $11.92¼ per bushel; November closed at $11.73½ per bushel; nearby cash was reported at $11.24¼; new crop cash was quoted at $11.12½ per bushel—all showing small declines for the day.
