Jose Fernando McCormick, a 52-year-old resident of Tucson, Arizona, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on June 27, 2025. United States District Court Judge Scott H. Rash delivered the sentence following McCormick’s guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. After serving his prison term, McCormick will be subject to five years of supervised release.
The case dates back to October 3, 2024, when McCormick arrived at a gas station in Tucson with approximately eight kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in his truck. He planned to hand over the drugs at the location but attempted to escape when law enforcement officers approached him. During his flight, he abandoned his moving vehicle, which subsequently collided with an electricity pole. Officers apprehended him shortly after in a residential shed nearby.
This incident is part of an operation by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF). The OCDETF aims to identify and dismantle top-level criminal organizations that pose threats within the United States through a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies and led by prosecutors. More details about the OCDETF program are available on their official website.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Culver from the District of Arizona’s Tucson office managed the prosecution efforts.
