The attorneys general of 14 Republican states have filed a brief in federal court to try to combat the Biden administration's cancellation of a lease on land to be used for domestic oil and gas production.
Amid soaring gas prices, 14 Republican-led states filed the brief at the Washington, D.C., Circuit Court for the case Friends of the Earth v. Haaland, et al, Fox Business reported. The brief said that the lease cancellation would only make matters worse with regard to current energy issues.
"The Biden Admin cares more about appeasing radical environmentalists rather than securing America's energy independence," Arizona Sen. Mark Brnovich said on Twitter. "It didn't have to be this way. That's why we continue to take action against Biden's incredibly harmful legacy on energy production."
The Biden administration canceled the lease sale of more than a million acres in Alaska's Cook Inlet and two lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, Fox Business reported. Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen led the push among the 14 states filing the brief.
"The Biden administration has been working hand in glove with these radical environmentalist groups to shut down American energy development," Knudsen told Fox News. "These groups have made a cottage industry out of weaponizing federal law to cripple responsible domestic energy development, and liberal judges are all too happy to facilitate this green coup."
The attorneys general accused courts of logjamming U.S. energy production by "weaponizing" the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Fox Business reported.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order to stop new federal land oil and gas leases shortly upon taking office in January 2021, Fox Business reported.
"Plaintiffs Friends of the Earth, Healthy Gulf, Sierra Club, and Center for Biological Diversity sued the federal Defendants to stop oil and gas production in the United States," the brief said. "This action dovetails with the federal Defendants’ own actions since January 20, 2021, to bottleneck the domestic supply of oil."
The national average for a gallon of gas as of June 13 was $5.01, AAA reported. This is the highest price AAA has seen since it started tracking gas prices in 2000.
In Arizona, the average on June 13 was $5.37 per gallon — a 19-cent increase from the week prior, AAA reported.
