WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema – Chair of the Border Management Subcommittee – spoke about how commonsense solutions to the border and immigration crisis can help solve workforce challenges during a roundtable discussion with members of the National Retail Federation (NRF.)

“A functioning border fuels a healthy American economy. Chaos in our system creates delays at our commercial ports, interrupts tourist visa approvals, and makes it harder for retailers to hire the employees they need,” said Sinema, Chair of the Border Management Subcommittee.

During the discussion, Sinema highlighted how her top priority is delivering real, lasting solutions to the security and humanitarian crisis at the border – which she emphasized will relieve ongoing workforce challenges.

NRF supports practical, comprehensive immigration reform that addresses the needs of both employers and those of the broader economy – noting that the current system is broken and in need of bipartisan reform. The Senator discussed her bipartisan proposal with Republican Senator Thom Tillis and how it will help mitigate workforce challenges and ensure our nation’s global competitiveness; fuel investments in Border Patrol Agents and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations Officers; improve control of the border through increased enforcement, technology, resources, and more; modernize the asylum system; and establish a pathway for legal citizenship for roughly 2 million Dreamers who were brought to this country when they were children through no fault of their own.

NRF is the world’s largest retail trade association. Retail is the largest private-sector industry employer in the United States and is responsible for supporting one in four U.S. jobs, or 52 million workers, and generating $3.9 trillion in annual GDP.
