A far-left group is pushing for an Arizona state constitutional amendment deceptively named the “Arizona Abortion Access Act,” that would create an unfettered right to abortion, mirroring laws adopted in states such as California, Arizona House Speaker Ben Toma said in a tweet on the X platform.
"In truth, it creates an unfettered right to abortion, mirroring laws adopted in states such as California," Toma said. "Proponents of this measure are so insistent on pushing their extreme agenda to the people of Arizona that they are willing to bypass all three branches of government with the hope that Arizonans will buy into their false narrative."
“Abortionists are resorting to this desperate measure to manipulate the initiative process & attempt to sway voters to put this ultra-radical & poorly written amendment in our state constitution," Toma wrote. "That would be wrong for our state.”
A dozen of Arizona’s 15 county attorneys asked Gov. Katy Hobbs on July 3 to rescind her order limiting their authority to pursue abortion cases, the Arizona Republic reported.
"Arizona’s laws are not settled, and county attorneys have proven they intend to rightfully push back against Governor Hobbs’ unlawful executive order that attempted to transfer county attorneys’ statutory authority to Attorney General Mayes,” Toma said.
Toma, who represents District 27, was elected Speaker of the House In January 2023, and before that, he served as House Republican Leader in 2021-22. An immigrant from Romania, he has a B.A. from Arizona State University and is married with five daughters, his website biography says.
