Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has announced her intention to propose Education Protection Orders, measures aimed at introducing gun control in the aftermath of a recent mass shooting in Maine. This plan is meeting resistance from Republican lawmakers who have expressed dissatisfaction with Mayes' proposals. The proposed Education Protection Orders are being referred to as "red flag laws."

"At a minimum we must be able to keep guns out of the hands of individuals who threaten our schools and universities," said Mayes on the X platform. "Next session, I plan to propose legislation for Education Protection Orders that would do just that."

These so-called "Red flag" laws empower judges to issue gun confiscation orders when an individual's behavior suggests they may pose a risk if they have access to weapons. According to AZ Free News, Mayes plans include using red flag laws not only to confiscate weapons from potentially threatening individuals but also from those who reside with such individuals. In addition, she intends to introduce other forms of gun control during the next legislative session.

This announcement was made in light of the 36th mass killing this year in the United States. Robert Card, a 40-year-old U.S Army reservist and firearms instructor shot 18 people and injured over a dozen others at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, Maine before going missing and later found dead by self-inflicted gunshot wound in Lisbon Falls. Associated Press reported that Card had acquired the firearms used in the shooting through legal means.

Mayes' proposal has led to disappointment among Republican lawmakers who argue that the red flag laws might be unconstitutional. Arizona State Senator Anthony Kern warned on X platform against such measures saying: "And if she tries, it will be an opportunity for the Legislature to push for Impeachment on Kris Mayes!"

Last week, Arizona House Democrats also called on their Republican colleagues for backing gun safety reform measures following another recent shooting incident which stirred disagreement among Republicans.
