Arizona governor vetoes bill on school shower accommodations

Arizona Democrats Support Transgender Students' Rights in Public School Showers

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Governor Katie Hobbs has vetoed SB 1182, a bill that sought to mandate public schools to provide accommodations for students unwilling or unable to use multi-occupancy shower rooms designated for their biological sex. The bill, sponsored by Senator John Kavanagh, proposed private shower spaces or designated times for transgender students.

The legislation aimed to ensure privacy and safety for all students during showering after physical education classes or sports practices. It also included provisions allowing private legal action if reasonable accommodations were not provided.

"Girls should not be forced to shower with boys in our taxpayer-funded public schools. It's utterly disgusting that Democrats, who are out-of-touch with reality, continue to push gender neutrality upon our children, endangering their safety and well-being just to politically platform off a small population they pretend to care about," said Senator Kavanagh. "All students, not just transgender kids, deserve to feel safe and deserve to have privacy when they're naked in a shower."

Kavanagh further criticized the veto as partisan-driven and urged Arizona parents and women to advocate for privacy rights. He emphasized that without such measures, female students might face embarrassment or potential harassment.

Governor Hobbs' office has yet to release an official statement regarding the veto.
