Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, said the fact that Democrats fought against requiring proof of citizenship for individuals to be able register to vote in elections is "damning."
"Damning that Dems fought so hard to allow registration to vote without proof of citizenship!" Musk wrote on X.
The comment was made in light of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' decision on July 18 to uphold a ruling that requires voters who register without showing proof of U.S. citizenship to be rejected.
Previously, voters who registered in Arizona using state registration forms were required to show proof of citizenship, but those who registered using federal forms were not. H.B. 2492, which was signed into law in March of 2022, requires all Arizona voters to show proof of citizenship.
Mi Familia Vota and Voto Latino filed the lawsuit in challenge of this new legislation, claiming it was too restrictive.
"This is a victory for election integrity in Arizona," Arizona State Senate President Warren Petersen (R-12) said. "Only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote in our elections. It sounds like common sense, but the radical left elected officials in our state continue to reject this notion, disrespecting the voices of our lawful Arizona voters. We are grateful the court is upholding this provision in our law, and it's time for Congress to take action to ensure only lawful U.S. citizens are voting in federal races."
