Despite early setbacks, including losses in multiple elections and a failed bid for the U.S. Senate in 1858, Lincoln's perseverance led him to the presidency. He played a crucial role in maintaining the Union during the Civil War, a critical period with lasting global impact.

Lincoln, the 16th president and first elected Republican, led the nation through the Civil War, enacted the abolition of slavery, and worked on national reconciliation. According to American Encore, Lincoln's actions were instrumental in maintaining the unity of the United States during this tumultuous period.
